GHMC Set for Three-Way Split After February, Officials Signal

Officials cited staffing changes and the council’s impending term end as cues for creating separate Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Malkajgiri civic bodies.

Overview

  • The GHMC Standing Committee approved a ₹11,460 crore draft budget for 2026–27, including ₹2,260 crore earmarked for the 27 newly merged ULB zones, with the plan headed to the council for final clearance.
  • Roads, bridges and H‑CITI works take the largest share, with ₹746 crore proposed for solid waste management, while revenues project ₹2,245 crore from property tax and higher state grants compared with this year.
  • The committee cleared a three‑year e‑tender for AI tools on the GHMC website, including a chatbot and automated form‑filling, alongside other resolutions such as a Hyderabad Sculpture Park and facility renaming.
  • Commissioner R. V. Karnan announced an intensified sanitation push and removal of abandoned vehicles, as the expanded jurisdiction now generates about 9,000 tonnes of waste daily and plans include an additional 24 MW waste‑to‑energy plant and a 300‑TPD biomethanation facility.
  • Following the 2025 merger that expanded GHMC to 2,053 sq km and 300 wards, new additional commissioners were placed over zone clusters, a move widely viewed as groundwork for the proposed trifurcation after the current council’s term ends in February 2026.
