Getty Center to Close for One-Year, $600–$800 Million Modernization Led by Gehry Partners

Getty says the work will improve sustainability, accessibility, plus visitor circulation before the 2028 Olympics.

Overview

  • The J. Paul Getty Trust confirmed the Getty Center will fully close to the public on March 15, 2027 for about a year and reopen in spring 2028 to finish upgrades ahead of the Los Angeles Olympics.
  • Gehry Partners will lead redesigns of the arrival sequence and lower tram station with WHY Architecture and OLIN contributing a new Welcome Hall and expanded landscaping.
  • The museum will replace its original 1997 tram with a new Doppelmayr system intended to increase rider capacity and reduce wait times during peak visitation.
  • Getty has begun initial infrastructure work, including gallery closures for HVAC upgrades, and estimates total program costs at roughly $600 million to $800 million while full financing and phasing remain to be detailed.
  • During the closure the Getty Villa will stay open and host select works and programming, and Getty says the project is meant as long-term stewardship to improve energy efficiency, circulation and access for the 1.4 million annual visitors.
