Germany’s Renewable Capacity Rises 11% in 2025, Led by Solar and Onshore Wind

The new figures underscore the need to accelerate onshore wind to reach 2030 targets.

Overview

  • Solar added 16.4 GW to reach about 117 GW, onshore wind grew by 4.6 GW to 68.1 GW, and offshore increased by roughly 0.3 GW to 9.5 GW, according to the Bundesnetzagentur.
  • Authorities approved around 20.8 GW of new projects, signaling a strong pipeline that could lift deployment in the coming years.
  • Rooftop photovoltaic growth slowed while ground-mounted projects expanded, a shift coinciding with policy changes such as no payments during negative-price periods for new systems.
  • Bavaria led solar expansion with about 4.5 GW of new capacity, and North Rhine-Westphalia posted the largest onshore wind gain at roughly 1.3 GW.
  • Meeting the onshore wind goal of 115 GW by 2030 will require roughly doubling the latest annual build rate.
