Overview
- Destatis reported on Tuesday that Germany’s population declined by 110,000 people in 2025 to 83.5 million, a 0.1 percent drop from 2024.
- The agency said 2025 saw a record natural deficit of 352,000 more deaths than births while net migration fell to +235,000, so migration no longer offset the natural loss.
- Only Berlin, Hamburg and Bremen recorded population gains in 2025 while eastern states shrank faster than western states and several rural regions lost residents.
- The number of people aged 60 to 79 rose by 358,000 and the share of those 60 and older reached 31 percent, changing demands on health care, pensions and local services.
- Mikrozensus first results published June 17 show more than four million people living in Germany arrived because of flight or expulsion since 1950, with large recent groups from Ukraine and Syria.
