Germany’s Plant-Based Meat Output Dips 1.2% in 2025 After Years of Growth

The pullback signals a pause in a niche market that remains far smaller than Germany’s meat industry.

Overview

  • Germany’s statistics office, in Monday’s release, said 2025 output of vegetarian and vegan meat substitutes fell to 124,900 tonnes as production value slipped 2.2% to €632.6 million.
  • The sector had expanded rapidly since 2019, with total output more than doubling over six years to a level 107% higher than the starting point.
  • Conventional meat stayed dominant in 2025 with €45.2 billion in factory-gate value, which was about 70 times the value of plant-based substitutes and 2% higher than a year earlier.
  • Per-capita meat consumption edged up to 54.9 kilograms in 2025, based on preliminary data from the Federal Office for Agriculture and Food, after declines in prior years.
  • EU negotiators reached a provisional March deal that keeps names like Veggie-Burger but would curb labels that mimic specific cuts such as ribs or chicken, pending formal approval.
