Overview
- Destatis, which published final 2025 EU-SILC results on Monday, reported that the share of people living in overoccupied homes climbed from 10.2% in 2020 to 11.7% in 2025.
- Adults with foreign nationality were hit hardest at 30.8%, compared with 6.7% for German adults, and people at risk of poverty faced a 27.4% rate.
- Households with children saw a 17.6% rate, rising to 32.1% for two adults with three or more children and 29.6% for single parents, while 19% of minors lived in crowded homes.
- Crowding concentrates in big cities at 16.9%, far above rural areas at 5.5%, and Germany’s overall rate stands below the EU average of 16.8%.
- EU-SILC measures crowding by rooms rather than floor space, requiring for example a common room and separate rooms for each adult or couple and age- and sex-based room needs for children.
