Germany’s Organic Food Sales Hit Record as Domestic Supply Lags

Fresh BIOFACH figures point to rising imports from a sector struggling to expand.

Overview

  • Sales of organic food reached €18.2 billion in 2025, up 6.7%, lifting organic’s share of food retail to 6.6%, according to BÖLW and AMI.
  • Certified organic area grew only 1.1% and now covers 11.7% of farmland, leaving a wide gap to the 30% target set for 2030.
  • Shortfalls in domestic supply are driving sourcing from abroad, with imports providing about 40% of organic carrots, 38% of butter and 34% of pork in 2023/24.
  • Structural strains are evident as many dairy farms gave up organic certification in 2025, with farm groups citing tighter enforcement of the EU pasture requirement.
  • Industry leaders called for public procurement of organic food, support for mid-sized processors and CAP-level incentives, while Bavaria urged faster conversion and the federal minister pledged to cut bureaucracy and address the pasture rule.
