Germany’s Inland Waterway Freight Falls to Lowest Since 1990

The figures point to exports by barge as the weak spot.

  • The Destatis report, published Wednesday, shows 171.6 million tonnes moved by inland shipping in 2025, down 1.3% to the lowest level since reunification.
  • Goods sent abroad fell 4.8% to 41.1 million tonnes, goods received from abroad edged up 0.6% to 77.0 million tonnes, domestic traffic held at 42.8 million tonnes, and transit dropped 5.4% to 10.7 million tonnes.
  • Dry bulk such as stones, ores, and coal totaled 92.5 million tonnes and liquid bulk like oil products and chemicals reached 49.0 million tonnes, while container cargo was 16.6 million tonnes for a 9.7% share.
  • Coal shipments rose 5.9% to 16.1 million tonnes as iron ore plunged 12.7% to 17.7 million tonnes, and liquid mineral oil products slipped 2.7% to 27.8 million tonnes.
  • Cross-border flows stayed tightly channeled through the ARA seaports, with 71.1% of foreign traffic via Antwerp, Rotterdam, and Amsterdam led by Rotterdam at 57.2 million tonnes, and Dutch-flagged vessels carried 55.1% of all tonnage.
