Germany’s Hydropower Group Says Output Could More Than Double

Industry says slow permits keep upgrades from unlocking more clean power.

Overview

  • The hydropower association BDW said the technology now supplies about 3–4% of Germany’s electricity.
  • BDW said modernizing existing plants, reactivating former dam sites and adding select new projects could more than double that share.
  • The group blamed long approval cycles, saying permits for upgrades or new builds take about seven years on average.
  • Energyminer has installed three floating “Energyfish” flow turbines in the Rhine at St. Goar and plans to grow the swarm to 124 units by year’s end to start feeding the public grid.
  • BDW said the flow devices complement higher‑yield reservoir plants, which provide steady power that helps keep the grid stable.
