Germany’s Home Office Use Rises to 25% in 2025

The figures are fueling calls for stronger home office rights from unions and labor researchers.

Overview

  • The new Destatis microcensus results, released Wednesday, show that 25% of people with jobs in Germany worked from home at least once in 2025, up from 24% in 2024 and back to the 2021 level.
  • Use is less intensive than during the pandemic, with 24% of home office users working only from home and 46% working at home for less than half of their days.
  • Germany sits slightly above the EU average of 23%, with the Netherlands at 52% and the lowest shares in Romania and Bulgaria at 4% and in Greece at 7%.
  • Home working concentrates in large firms and knowledge jobs, reaching 35% in companies with 250 or more staff and about 74% in IT, corporate management, and consulting, but only 6–10% in hospitality, building services, and retail; mid‑career workers aged 35–44 logged the highest use at 30% while those 15–24 had 10%.
  • Responding to the data and high fuel prices, the DGB is urging more home office to cut commuting, and WSI researcher Bettina Kohlrausch is calling for a legal right to work from home, saying it would help women who carry most care duties.
