Germany’s Employment Falls Again in Q1 as Industry Sheds Jobs

Germany now trails EU job growth.

Overview

  • Destatis, which reported Tuesday, said employment fell by 61,000 quarter on quarter after seasonal adjustment and by 157,000 year on year, with an unadjusted drop of 486,000 to 45.6 million.
  • Job losses were steep in the producing sector and construction, with industry down 171,000 jobs and building down 27,000, while public services, education and health added 181,000 roles.
  • Employees covered by social insurance fell by 120,000 to 42.0 million and the number of self‑employed dropped by 37,000 to 3.6 million, even as average hours worked ticked up 0.3% and total hours held steady at 15.7 billion.
  • Germany underperformed the rest of Europe as EU employment rose 0.6% year on year and the euro area rose 0.5%, and the economics ministry says the usual spring rebound will largely not appear.
  • Weak hiring weighs on people in export‑reliant regions and on the Federal Employment Agency’s budget, which took a loan in 2025 and is running a larger deficit in 2026 as benefit costs rise.
