Germany’s 2025 Wine Output Slips 2.6% to 7.55 Million Hectoliters

Heavy September rain cut yields in the largest regions, lifting the share of higher Prädikat wines.

Overview

  • Germany’s statistics office reported total wine and must production at 7.55 million hectoliters in 2025, which was 10% below the 2019–2024 average.
  • Intense rain in September raised rot risk and shortened the harvest, leading to steep declines in Rheinhessen at minus 13.8% and the Pfalz at minus 14.3%.
  • The share of Prädikatswein rose to 29.3% from 16.1% in 2024, a quality tier in German law based on grape ripeness at harvest.
  • Mosel output increased 12% to 1.27 million hectoliters, driven by merchant cellars that process grapes brought in from other regions.
  • Other regions were mixed as Baden, Württemberg, and Franken grew, the Rheingau fell, and smaller areas such as Sachsen and the Ahr recorded large percentage gains.
