Germany’s 2025 Power Mix: Solar and Gas Hit Records as Renewables Hold Majority

Preliminary Destatis figures indicate a small uptick in generation volume alongside a reduced electricity import surplus.

Overview

  • Electricity fed into the grid reached 438.2 TWh in 2025, up 1.4% from 2024.
  • Renewables supplied 58.6% of domestic generation at 256.9 TWh, essentially flat year over year at −0.1%.
  • Photovoltaic output jumped 17.4% to a record 70.1 TWh, while gas‑fired generation rose 10.2% to a record 70.6 TWh.
  • Wind generation fell 3.6% to 131.3 TWh yet remained the largest single source; hydropower dropped 22.5% to 15.8 TWh and coal edged down 0.5% to 96.8 TWh for a 22.1% share.
  • Imports declined to 79.6 TWh (−2.6%) as exports increased to 60.2 TWh (+8.7%), leaving a third consecutive import surplus that narrowed 26.2% to 19.4 TWh.
