Germany’s 2025 Gambling Survey: One-Third Play, 2.2% Meet Disorder Criteria

The study highlights peak harm among 18–25-year-olds, with strong public backing for protection tools.

Overview

  • In the past 12 months, 36.4% of people in Germany took part in at least one form of gambling for money.
  • An estimated 2.2% of 18–70-year-olds meet clinical criteria for a gambling disorder, roughly 1.2 million people.
  • Men are affected far more than women (3.2% vs. 1.1%), and the highest rate is among 18–25-year-olds (4.6%) compared with 0.8% in those aged 56–70.
  • Risk varies sharply by product, with virtual slot players showing the steepest disorder rates (32.5%), followed by gambling and casino machines and live sports bets.
  • Newly measured daytrading was reported by 6.5% of respondents, with about 12% of those meeting disorder criteria, as the survey also records high approval for safeguards and renewed warnings about a €3–6 billion illegal market.
