Germany Warns of Holiday Traffic Peaks on December 19–20

Transport agencies urge travelers to use live stau maps to avoid the 19–20 December peak.

Overview

  • Traffic is forecast to surge after school on Friday, 19 December, with the heaviest delays between 14:00 and 18:00, and to remain high on Saturday, 20 December, before easing on Sunday.
  • Authorities highlight heavy loads on core corridors including the A1, A2, A3, A5, A6, A7, A8, A9, A10, A81 and A99, with particular pressure on routes toward Alpine wintersport areas.
  • Construction zones and local events are expected to cause additional bottlenecks on specific stretches, with city shopping on the fourth Advent weekend and major concerts in Vienna adding near-term strain.
  • Heiligabend (24 December) and Silvester (31 December) are expected to be among the quietest driving days, while a new wave is projected toward ski regions on 27–28 December and on return routes 2–4 and 6 January.
  • Autobahn GmbH and motoring clubs advise checking autobahn.de and the Autobahn GmbH app for live stau and construction data, using park-and-ride or public transport for city trips, and allowing for possible border-control waits on key crossings.
