Germany Plans Nationwide AI Drone Detection and Defence Network

Officials say a fused civil‑military air picture would fill gaps between local and federal authorities, improving protection for airports, power plants, military sites.

Overview

  • Deutsche Flugsicherung (DFS) said on June 12 that it has drawn up the 'Aktionsplan Drohnen Deutschland' with Hensoldt and Deutsche Telekom to build an AI platform that links cell‑tower data with fixed detection and defeat sites.
  • The proposed system would merge reports from distributed optical, acoustic and electromagnetic sensors into an automated, nationwide air‑situation picture for use by civilian agencies and the Bundeswehr.
  • Planned countermeasures described in reporting include radio jammers, intercepting or ramming drones, and net‑capture systems, combined with sensor fusion to speed identification and response.
  • The plan remains at the design stage because legal authorizations, who controls responses across federal, state and local bodies, procurement rules and technical interoperability still need to be resolved.
  • If put in place, the network would reshape protection of critical infrastructure by centralizing detection and data sharing but will raise choices about data access, use of defensive force and civilian privacy that must be settled before deployment.
