Germany Cuts Back Civil-Servant Pay Plan, Halts Extra Raises for Top Grades

Final approval by the cabinet and the Bundestag is still required.

Overview

  • The Interior Ministry issued a revised pay table that rules out any increase beyond the regular wage deal for senior federal officials.
  • The table, slated to apply from May, sets monthly base pay at €10,572.91 for grade B3 and €16,530.96 for grade B10, both below the earlier draft.
  • Officials said the original plan would have added more than €3 billion a year to costs, which drove the decision to scale back top-tier raises.
  • The draft aims to align federal pay and pensions with last April’s public-service wage agreement and to carry out Constitutional Court rulings on proper civil-servant pay.
  • Separately, Chancellery minister Thorsten Frei said he opposes paying the planned tax-free €1,000 relief bonus to federal civil servants.
