Germany Condemns Russia's Escalation and Pledges €60 Million to Ukraine

Berlin says the support will shore up civilian relief and shore up NATO-backed energy and counter-drone capacity to help open space for stalled diplomacy.

Overview

  • German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul visited Kyiv on Saturday and publicly accused Russia of stepping up a campaign that deliberately targets civilians and infrastructure.
  • Wadephul announced €50 million in new humanitarian aid and €10 million into NATO’s CAP fund, and said additional generators and material assistance will go to frontline areas.
  • The visit followed a Russian drone strike that killed at least 16 people in eastern Ukraine and UN figures showing 2026 civilian deaths at their highest since the war’s opening months.
  • Ukraine says peace talks are currently on hold and called for stronger U.S. engagement; Wadephul said he will press the issue with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio next week and urged exploring unconventional negotiation formats.
  • Allies are coordinating targeted sanctions and using NATO financing tools such as CAP, PURL and Jumpstart to fund energy resilience and counter-drone and air-defence needs, but shortages of interceptors persist because some systems were diverted to other crises.
