Germany Adds Two FSME Risk Districts as 2024 Tick-Borne Deaths Rise

New hotspots point to a longer tick season driven by warmer weather.

Overview

  • Destatis, which reported Tuesday, said 24 people died in 2024 from tick-borne diseases in Germany.
  • Hospitals treated about 850 FSME patients in 2024, well above the long-term average of roughly 490.
  • The RKI’s 2026 map now lists 185 risk districts after adding Nordsachsen and Halle (Saale), showing spread beyond the southern states.
  • This year’s reports to the RKI count 918 Lyme-Borreliose cases and 11 FSME cases as of April 13.
  • STIKO recommends FSME vaccination for people exposed in risk areas, with most protection building 14 days after the second dose and full cover after three shots.
