German Snowshoer, 59, Killed in Tyrol Avalanche While Crossing Steep Gully

Prosecutors ordered an autopsy following the recovery by mountain rescuers.

Overview

  • The man from the Stuttgart area was swept away on March 8 while attempting to cross a roughly 30‑metre‑wide, 35–40° gully on the Stubaier Höhenweg near Neustift at about 2,020 metres.
  • His two companions raised the alarm immediately, and helicopter crews detected his avalanche transceiver signal from the air.
  • Rescuers, including a search‑dog team, dug him out of the debris, and an emergency doctor confirmed his death at the scene.
  • Responding units included the emergency helicopter Christophorus 1, the police helicopter Libelle Tirol, Bergrettung Neustift, a rescue‑dog handler and the alpine police.
  • Authorities confirmed the fatality on March 9, reports vary on how far he was carried—about 400 metres in some accounts versus about 700 metres in others—and the body was flown to the valley for autopsy.
