German Pump Prices Reach Highest Since 2024 as Brent Rises on Middle East Tensions

Independent analysis finds the new CO₂ regime accounts for only a small share of the earlier price leap.

Overview

  • ADAC reports a weekly rise to €1.776 per liter for Super E10 (+1.8 cents) and €1.740 for diesel (+2.9 cents), the highest levels since 2024.
  • Brent crude is near $71 a barrel after a roughly $4 weekly gain, with concerns over a wider Middle East conflict and risks around the Strait of Hormuz lifting prices.
  • RWI estimates the turn‑of‑year jump at nearly 10 cents per liter, while the higher CO₂ charge explains at most 2.8 cents for petrol and 3.2 cents for diesel.
  • After adjusting for oil and exchange rates, RWI still finds residual increases of about 6.5 cents for Super E10 and 7.4 cents for diesel between December and January, prompting calls for clearer price breakdowns.
  • The Bundeskartellamt points to higher CO₂ costs and stricter climate rules as main drivers and reports no evidence of illegal excess profits, while station operators say margins remain low.
