German Grocery Price Cuts Accelerate as Study Finds Discounts Skew to Indulgent Foods

New price cuts by Aldi, Lidl coincide with rankings that split consumer favor.

Overview

  • Cerascreen’s prospect analysis counted 498 offers at Kaufland, 436 at Edeka, 243 at Lidl and 178 at Aldi across late Sept–Oct 2025, with the biggest average markdowns on spices, fresh cheese and sweets.
  • The study finds discounts concentrate on processed and indulgent categories, while fruit, vegetables, fish and basic staples are rarely reduced, a pattern the company warns can steer shoppers toward less healthy choices.
  • Aldi launched a fifth January round of permanent reductions on roughly 20 wurst and meat products effective Jan 23, cutting most prices by 10–20 cents per pack with some differences between Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd.
  • Lidl subsequently lowered prices nationwide on several beef items, including Rinderhackfleisch and steaks, with savings of up to 50 cents per product.
  • Perception splits in new surveys: YouGov/Handelsblatt rates Aldi best on price–performance (Net Score 57.7), while EY‑Parthenon ranks Edeka most preferred and Lidl second, as retailers and the industry body reject an SPD/Greens “Deutschlandkorb” and the minister rules out mandated price baskets.
