Overview
- German Cycling announced Tuesday that it has accepted formal sponsorship (Trägerschaft) of the Grand Départ Germany bid while the association Grand Départ Allemagne will continue to run the effort operationally.
- The bid targets a 2029 Grand Départ with proposed stages through Berlin, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia to mark the 40th anniversary of the Peaceful Revolution and the fall of the Berlin Wall.
- Regional governments in Berlin, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia are currently evaluating the scope and costs of participation including logistics, security and funding commitments.
- Organisers say national federation backing is needed to assemble the technical, political and financial package that Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO) requires for a formal host selection.
- If selected the Tour would return to Germany for the first time since 2017, and the bid could bring large crowds, tourism revenue and months of infrastructure work to the eastern states while pending final ASO approval.
