German Chains Reject Across-the-Board Senior Discount After Local Store's 10% Offer

The move tests how app-only discounts exclude many older shoppers.

Overview

  • A small supermarket in Neuruppin, Teiba Markt, is giving pensioners 10% off most items, with tobacco excluded and the cut applied at checkout on presentation of a pension ID.
  • The operator, Yasser Daaboul, launched the deal to ease local old-age poverty and he set no end date.
  • Major chains including Aldi, Lidl, Rewe, Edeka and Kaufland say they are not planning a dedicated senior discount.
  • Those retailers point shoppers to alternatives such as app-based coupons, low-price store brands or prices set by regional operators.
  • Lidl promotes its Lidl Plus app and paper coupons, Rewe highlights its low-cost “ja!” line, Kaufland leans on its Card XTRA program and Aldi says it passes on low prices without targeted deals.
