German Catholic Church Abuse Panel Approves €93.2 Million as New Claims Hit Record Low

The new data depict declining first-time filings with a sharper focus on clearing remaining cases.

  • New first-time applications fell to 186 in 2025, down from 349 in 2024 and from a peak of 1,565 in 2021.
  • The commission reports roughly 4,700 total proceedings to date and a reduced backlog of about 690 open cases.
  • In 2025 it approved around €7.7 million for first and follow-up applications and about €8.8 million in appeal or renewed-submission cases, with 16 awards exceeding €250,000 and 47 such high-value awards since 2021.
  • Payments are a voluntary recognition offer based on plausibility rather than court-standard proof, civil lawsuits remain available, and the final rejection rate is under one percent.
