Overview
- The Luftwaffe and Hamburg Airport announced that Dispersed Operations 2026 – Panther Shield will run from 8 to 12 June with daily activity roughly between 09:00 and 18:00.
- The drill will deploy six Tornado jets from Taktisches Luftwaffengeschwader 51 “Immelmann” to practise starts, landings, refuelling and protection of forces on civilian ground facilities.
- Organisers say military crews will coordinate closely with airport staff to keep regular flight operations largely unaffected and Hamburg will provide infrastructure and logistical support.
- Officials including Economy Senator Melanie Leonhard, airport chief Christian Kunsch and Oberst Jens Schumacher are scheduled to attend the opening on 8 June, and local noise concerns have been raised by flight-noise groups.
- The exercise builds on Germany’s 2024 Operationsplan Deutschland and recent Red Storm ground manoeuvres and signals a broader shift toward dispersed air operations to make forces more resilient and harder to target.
