Gerd Faltings Wins 2026 Abel Prize for Breakthroughs in Arithmetic Geometry

The Norwegian Academy cites his tools in arithmetic geometry that resolved longstanding conjectures.

Overview

  • The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters announced the award to the 71-year-old German mathematician from the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn.
  • The official citation honors him "for the introduction of powerful tools in arithmetic geometry" that shaped the field for decades.
  • Faltings achieved global recognition in 1983 by proving the Mordell conjecture and later developed methods, including Faltings' product theorem, used to solve the Mordell–Lang conjecture.
  • The prize carries 7.5 million Norwegian kroner in award money and will be presented in Oslo on 26 May by Crown Prince Haakon.
  • A Fields Medalist since 1986, Faltings has been an emeritus director at the Max Planck Institute since 2023 and continues active research.
