Gerald R. Ford Heads Home as U.S. Keeps Two Carriers in the Arabian Sea

CENTCOM outlines 'Project Freedom' support that stops short of direct Navy escorts.

Overview

  • USS Gerald R. Ford is now in the Mediterranean and is set to sail back to Norfolk after a 314-day deployment, USNI News reported.
  • CENTCOM continues to control two carrier strike groups, Abraham Lincoln and George H.W. Bush, positioned together in the Arabian Sea.
  • CENTCOM said support for Project Freedom will include guided-missile destroyers, more than 100 aircraft across land and sea, multi-domain unmanned systems, and 15,000 personnel.
  • The Wall Street Journal, cited by The War Zone, reported the plan does not currently include U.S. Navy warships escorting commercial ships through the strait.
  • The Boxer Amphibious Ready Group is operating in the Indian Ocean and remains under Indo-Pacific Command for now.
