Georgia Begins $1 Billion Surplus Tax Refunds Under HB 1000

The payout reflects a policy of sending surplus cash back to filers rather than expanding state spending.

Overview

  • The Department of Revenue, which began sending payments Monday, expects most eligible filers to be paid in the coming weeks, marking the fourth round of surplus refunds under Gov. Brian Kemp.
  • To qualify, you must have filed Georgia returns for 2024 and 2025 by the 2025 deadline, paid state income tax, and not fall into excluded groups such as nonresident aliens, estates, trusts, or most dependents.
  • Refunds equal the lesser of your 2024 Georgia tax liability or a cap based on status: $250 for single or married filing separately, $375 for head of household, and $500 for married filing jointly.
  • Refunds arrive by direct deposit or paper check based on your 2025 return instructions, and you can check status in the Georgia Tax Center’s Surplus Refund tool using your SSN or ITIN and federal adjusted gross income.
  • The state will first use the refund to cover debts like back taxes or child support, and the payment is not taxable under Georgia law.
