Georgetown Isolates Broken 42-Inch Sewer Line After 100,000-Gallon San Gabriel River Spill

City tap water remains safe for customers.

Overview

  • Crews have isolated the failed wastewater line and installed a temporary dam, allowing repair work and a root-cause assessment to proceed.
  • More than 100,000 gallons of untreated sewage entered the South Fork of the San Gabriel River after the break discovered Jan. 5 near Wolf Ranch west of I-35.
  • Residents are urged to avoid river water in San Gabriel Park and Blue Hole Park, and a section of the South San Gabriel River Trail is closed to pedestrians.
  • Private well users within a half-mile of the site should use boiled or distilled water for personal uses and have wells tested and disinfected before resuming normal use.
  • The spill was reported to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, and officials say the cause and exact timing of the failure remain under investigation.
