Geomagnetic Storm Eases as Moderate Quakes Strike Far East Russia and Xinjiang

Driven by a coronal hole together with a Dec. 1 solar flare, the storm now shows a downward trend.

Overview

  • The disturbance that began overnight has lasted more than 10 hours and weakened from G2 to G1, with the geomagnetic index near Kr ≈ 4.33, according to the IKI RAS solar astronomy lab.
  • Forecasters say the coronal hole’s breadth could prolong unsettled conditions, with higher aurora odds at high latitudes though intensity remains uncertain.
  • A magnitude 5.4 earthquake off Kamchatka at 13:18 UTC on December 4 was felt up to intensity 4 in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, and no tsunami alert was issued.
  • A magnitude 4.6 quake near the northern Kurils early December 4 occurred 79 km southeast of Severo-Kurilsk at a depth of 12 km, was felt at 3–4 intensity, and did not trigger a tsunami warning.
  • In China’s Xinjiang region, a magnitude 6 earthquake struck Akqi at 15:44 local time with a 10 km depth, and officials reported no immediate information on casualties or damage.
