Genova Tuna Recall Widens After Quarantined Cans Are Mistakenly Shipped to Nine States

Regulators say a 2025 pull‑tab defect can compromise can seals, allowing botulism contamination.

Overview

  • Tri-Union Seafoods and the FDA issued a new alert after a third-party distributor inadvertently released quarantined Genova Yellowfin Tuna tied to last year’s recall.
  • The affected items are Genova Yellowfin Tuna in Olive Oil 5 oz 4-pack (UPC 4800073265; can codes S84N D2L best by 1/21/2028 and S84N D3L best by 1/24/2028) and Genova Yellowfin Tuna in Extra Virgin Olive Oil with Sea Salt 5 oz (UPC 4800013275; can code S88N D1M best by 1/17/2028).
  • Shipments went to Meijer in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin; Giant Food in Maryland and Virginia; and Safeway, Albertsons, Vons and Pavilions in California.
  • Consumers are urged not to eat the tuna even if it looks or smells normal; return it for a refund, discard it, or request a retrieval kit and coupon from Tri-Union at support@thaiunionhelp.zendesk.com or 833-374-0171.
  • No confirmed illnesses have been reported in connection with the newly distributed cans, and Tri-Union says it is working with the distributor and the FDA to prevent a repeat incident.
