Genndy Tartakovsky to Helm Animated Conan the Barbarian for Prime Video and Cartoon Network

Tartakovsky returns to adapting an existing property as the streamer expands its slate of sword-and-sorcery projects.

Overview

  • Prime Video and Cartoon Network Studios announced the new animated Conan series at their Annecy presentation and released an official logline about Conan racing to save the pirate queen Bêlit from dark sorcery.
  • Genndy Tartakovsky will serve as showrunner and executive producer and is joined on the production by executive producers Darrick Bachman, Fred Malmberg and Mark Wheeler.
  • The series is in early development and Tartakovsky said in a pre-taped Annecy message that he expects to share animatics the following year and rough animation the year after.
  • This project is Tartakovsky’s first adaptation of a preexisting intellectual property since his 2003 Clone Wars micro-series and builds on his history with Cartoon Network titles such as Samurai Jack and Dexter’s Laboratory.
  • The announcement furthers Prime Video’s push into large-scale fantasy and sword-and-sorcery programming while underscoring that animation development will take multiple years and no release date has been set.
