Genetic Test Clears Allgäu of Bear Presence

Specialist field checks followed by laboratory genetics reassured residents after ruling out a bear, with officials noting bears still sometimes cross from the Italian Alps

Overview

  • Officials announced an Entwarnung after the Senckenberg-Institut’s genetic analysis found the suspicious droppings were from a European badger, not a brown bear.
  • The sample was first discovered in the southern part of Landkreis Oberallgäu and examined by a member of the Netzwerk Große Beutegreifer before being sent to the specialised lab for testing.
  • Authorities said badger droppings can resemble bear scat because the two species sometimes eat the same foods, which can lead to false-positive field identifications.
  • There is currently no confirmed brown bear in the Allgäu; the last verified Bavarian bear sighting was a photo detection in May 2023 near Bad Hindelang.
  • Officials used the case to reassure the public and to remind farmers and hikers of standard precautions because bears from the Trentino population of roughly 100 animals still occasionally move across borders into Austria or Germany.
