Generalitat of Catalonia Signs €58.4 Million Deal to Buy Half of Banco de España’s Barcelona HQ

The purchase advances a shift to owning offices to cut rental costs.

Overview

  • The agreement was signed in Barcelona by President Salvador Illa and Bank of Spain governor José Luis Escrivá, alongside a new cooperation pact on financial education.
  • The acquisition covers seven floors from the second to the eighth, totaling more than 13,000 square metres, with payment to be made in four annual instalments according to people familiar with the deal.
  • The government has budgeted €36.9 million for refurbishment, targets relocating staff around 2033, and expects to move roughly 700 employees into the site.
  • Replacing leased offices, the operation is projected to save about €4.5 million annually and more than €98 million per decade.
  • The Bank of Spain will concentrate its remaining operations in the building and expand Project Delta, its Barcelona-based AI lab, which has 14 staff and plans to add 18 this year under director Ignasi Belda.
