Gendarmerie Seizes 17.9 Kilos of Marijuana on Route 38 in Tucumán

Federal prosecutors assumed the case under Argentina’s narcotics law following stepped-up controls on the corridor.

Overview

  • Gendarmería Nacional’s Sección “Núcleo” of Escuadrón 71 “Aguilares” intercepted a car during a routine checkpoint near Huacra in La Cocha, Tucumán.
  • Officers found a large bundle in the trunk containing 17 pressed bricks coated with grease and wrapped in a black burlap-like covering.
  • Field testing confirmed cannabis with a total weight of 17.861 kilograms, and the vehicle and drugs were seized.
  • The driver, who had departed San Miguel de Tucumán and was headed to San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca, was detained.
  • The Justicia Federal de Tucumán ordered detention and formal seizure under Law 23.737, with authorities noting a recent rise in Route 38 interdictions and that many prior large shipments were bound for Mendoza.
