Gen Z Now Binge Drinks More Than Millennials at the Same Age, UCL Study Finds

The findings come from repeated surveys at ages 17 and 23 of nearly 10,000 UK-born participants.

Overview

  • University College London analyzed a longitudinal cohort of nearly 10,000 people born between 2000 and 2002.
  • Binge drinking and trying hard drugs roughly tripled between ages 17 and 23 in the same individuals.
  • At 23, 68% reported binge drinking in the past year, with 29% doing so monthly or more versus 10% at 17.
  • About half had tried cannabis by 23, and roughly one in three had used harder drugs such as cocaine, ketamine or ecstasy.
  • Daily vaping rose from 3% to 19% and 32% reported gambling in the past year, with higher risks among men and university attendees as the lead author urged policy action.
