Gemini Go Rolls Out to Replace Assistant Go on Android Go Phones

Google is delivering Gemini Go through an update to the Google Search/Google Go experience to bring a slimmed-down Gemini with calling, texting, local search, file uploads and media controls to low‑end phones.

Overview

  • Google has started a gradual rollout of Gemini Go that replaces Assistant Go and embeds the assistant in the Google Search/Google Go app rather than as a separate flagship app.
  • The lightweight assistant is built for Android Go devices and requires a minimum of 2GB of RAM, so phones with less memory will not be supported.
  • Gemini Go exposes many core Gemini functions in a simplified form, including making calls, sending texts, finding local information, creating alarms and calendar events, uploading files, and playing media.
  • Users can launch Gemini Go by long-pressing the Home button or the Power key, but Google has not yet published wide UI screenshots or detailed documentation for the new interface.
  • The move furthers Google’s multi-phase consolidation of assistant features under the Gemini brand and signals a shift away from Google Assistant on entry-level devices, which could change how low-cost phone users access conversational AI in emerging markets.
