Gelman Santander Collection Returns to Mexico City With 68 Modern Works at Museo de Arte Moderno

The opening marks the start of an international tour under strengthened legal protections.

Overview

  • Relatos modernos: Obras emblemáticas de la Colección Gelman Santander runs Feb. 17–May 17, 2026, at the Museo de Arte Moderno in Chapultepec.
  • The 68 works, unseen in Mexico for nearly two decades, include ten Frida Kahlo oils and pieces by Diego Rivera, Rufino Tamayo, María Izquierdo, José Clemente Orozco and others.
  • At least 27 works carry Monumento Artístico status and were registered with the national conservation registry to ensure control, traceability and safe handling.
  • Curated by museum director Marisol Argüelles, the exhibition is organized into four thematic nuclei exploring national iconography, tensions between tradition and modernity, and artistic experimentation.
  • Cultural authorities say the presentation follows months of coordination among the collection, INBAL and the Culture Secretariat and inaugurates the Colección Gelman Santander’s new international itinerary.
