Gelman Santander Collection Draws Over 310,000 Visitors Ahead of International Tour

The turnout underscores Mexico’s cultural diplomacy as INBAL readies temporary export permits to ensure the works return home.

Overview

  • The Museo de Arte Moderno show has recorded more than 310,000 visits and will close on Sunday, July 19, 2026, after opening in February.
  • Organizers confirmed an outbound itinerary beginning at Faro Santander in Spain in September 2026, with exhibitions at Fondation Beyeler in Basel from January to May 2027 and the National Museum of Norway from June to November 2027.
  • The collection comprises 68 key works of 20th‑century Mexican modernism and will return to Mexico in 2028 for display at MARCO in Monterrey.
  • Since 2023 the collection has been owned by Mexican proprietors and 30 works carry a Monumento Artístico designation that bars permanent export and requires INBAL‑managed temporary permits.
  • INBAL will act as the export authority to process customs paperwork and supervise conservation and transport while Fundación Banco Santander will support research, conservation and international dissemination.
