Gazebo Collapses in Sion Garden, Five Seniors Hurt

An engineering assessment has been called for to determine whether poor upkeep or vibrations from nearby piling work caused the shelter to fail.

Overview

  • A cement-roofed, open-sided gazebo in Mala Garden, Pratiksha Nagar, gave way while five senior citizens were seated beneath it, causing injuries reported after the incident on Wednesday, August 12.
  • Local residents and passersby pulled the trapped people from the wreckage and rushed them to Sion Hospital before Mumbai Fire Brigade, police and ambulance teams arrived to clear debris and secure the scene.
  • Hospital officials identified the injured as Dhondiram Ghopkar (65), Ganpat Ambole (79), Pramila Jadhav (68), Laxmi Shitliya (65) and Sunita More (64), and said all five are in stable condition.
  • Residents allege vibrations from piling work at an adjacent construction site and long-standing leaks and cracks contributed to the collapse, but civic authorities have not confirmed a cause and have said a structural inspection is needed.
  • The widely shared video of the collapse has intensified scrutiny of maintenance of small civic shelters used by the elderly and is likely to prompt BMC inspections and calls for clearer repair and safety protocols for public gardens.
