Gauteng’s January Transport Crackdown Nets 148 Impounds, 259 Taxi Discontinuations

  • Officers impounded 148 vehicles—46 in Tshwane, 41 in Johannesburg and 61 in Ekurhuleni—and discontinued 259 minibus taxis for failing roadworthiness requirements.
  • Inspections identified critical defects including faulty brakes, worn tyres, non‑functioning lights and cracked windscreens that posed significant risk to road users.
  • More than 5,800 infringement notices were issued, comprising over 2,600 manual and 3,255 electronic notices, with 372 drivers found without valid licences and 456 minibuses without valid licence discs.
  • Seventy‑three arrests were recorded, including 59 for driving under the influence, alongside cases of fraud, bribery, immigration contraventions, illegal possession of ammunition and reckless driving.
