Gardacostas Seize 263.4 Kg of Seafood and Remove 656 Illegal Fishing Implements

Officials say the weeklong operations aim to protect marine stocks by clearing unmarked gear, preventing ghost fishing and redirecting edible catches to charities.

Overview

  • The Servizo de Gardacostas of Galicia led coordinated land and sea patrols along the Galician coast between August 10 and 16 with support from ERPOL and the Guardia Civil.
  • Authorities removed 656 illegal or noncompliant implements, including 503 nasas, 129 cacharros for octopus, 25 enmalle pieces and 15 votirón-type nasas.
  • Seized seafood totaled 263.4 kilograms with the largest amounts being octopus (117.7 kg), spider crab (40 kg), edible crab (31 kg), and 30.2 kg of undocumented pancho bicudo.
  • Officials processed 46 actas for presumed infractions, returned almost all live specimens to the sea and donated consumable catches that could not be released to local charities and soup kitchens.
  • The operations are part of routine anti-poaching vigilance intended to reduce unregulated extraction and ghost fishing, while preserving stocks and supporting local social needs; follow-up administrative sanctions and prosecutions may follow the actas.
