Gardaí Seize Dozens of E‑Bikes and E‑Scooters in Dublin Raids

The operation intensifies enforcement at a turning point for e‑scooter policy with licensing due to start in September.

Overview

  • Gardaí carried out a day of action that involved 63 searches across the Dublin Metropolitan Region and resulted in the seizure of 38 e‑bikes and e‑scooters, three scrambler bikes and a quad bike.
  • Officers also seized a sawn‑off shotgun with ammunition, about €8,000 in cash and roughly €83,000 worth of suspected drugs that are awaiting forensic analysis.
  • A man in his 20s was arrested during the operation and is being detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.
  • New e‑scooter safety rules requiring helmets and hi‑viz clothing and raising the minimum age have just come into effect, with formal licensing and registration due to begin in September.
  • The raids form part of Operation Meacán, launched in December 2023 to disrupt criminal use of electric vehicles, and they increase pressure on ministers and policing leaders who have signalled support for tighter controls or a full ban.
