Gardaí Report Significant Progress in Investigation of Dublin Fatal Stabbing

Detectives have seized knives and blood-stained clothing and are analysing CCTV and social media as they hunt suspected attackers.

Overview

  • The attack began after a row at a rap night and, in the early hours of Monday, June 1, 21-year-old Maynooth student Qayyum Balogun was chased about 100 metres onto Clarendon Street and stabbed multiple times before dying at hospital.
  • Gardaí say they have recovered several knives and sent them to Forensic Science Ireland for DNA and fingerprint testing and have seized blood-stained clothing from an Airbnb in Dublin 4 for forensic examination.
  • Two people in their 20s have been detained in connection with the inquiry; a woman has been released pending a file for the Director of Public Prosecutions and a man remains under arrest while investigators prepare evidence.
  • Detectives are seeking a number of persons of interest including a chief suspect with prior convictions who is believed to have travelled to the UK and who is alleged to have posted boastful messages online after the attack.
  • Balogun’s family and school have called for justice and gardaí are asking the public for more CCTV or phone footage from the Grafton Street and Clarendon Street area as officers increase cross-border checks and forensic work to identify all involved.
