Garda Pleads Guilty to Years of Coercive Control

Allegations of prolonged domestic control by a serving garda have prompted an adjournment so counselling reports can be prepared before final sentence.

Overview

  • The defendant, David Reynolds, has pleaded guilty to a pattern of controlling and coercive behaviour against his wife and remains suspended from An Garda Síochána on bail with sentencing adjourned to 6 October for counselling reports to be prepared.
  • The victim, Ashley Masterson, waived her right to anonymity and had her impact statement read into the record describing sustained emotional trauma, constant fatigue, anxiety and severe financial harm.
  • Court evidence includes 13 hours of audio recordings seized from Reynolds’s phone, allegations he installed a tracker on his wife’s phone, restricted her social contact and controlled household finances.
  • Judge Keenan Johnson criticised Reynolds’s attitude to marriage, described him as manipulative with anger issues, and said the loss of his position in the force is a factor the court must consider when sentencing.
  • The case has drawn attention to how allegations against serving officers are handled and to survivor support needs, with local and national organisations offering help to those affected by domestic abuse.
