Garda Bank‑Holiday Road Blitz Sees 100+ Speeding Detections and 56 Impairment Arrests

High-visibility checks are being used to deter dangerous driving and protect pedestrians and cyclists through targeted patrols and mandatory intoxicant testing.

Overview

  • An Garda Síochána has mounted a nationwide roads policing operation for the bank holiday and officers remain on duty carrying out checks across the national road network.
  • More than 100 drivers were detected for speeding during the operation so far, including extreme cases such as 130km/h in a 60km/h zone on the R188 at Drung.
  • Fifty-six people have been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs as part of mandatory intoxicant testing at checkpoints and during patrols.
  • Gardaí recorded over 115 instances of mobile-phone use or seatbelt non-compliance, and they and the Road Safety Authority urged motorists to slow down and avoid distractions to protect vulnerable road users.
  • Long weekends are high-risk periods for collisions so the Garda operation will continue through the holiday with figures described as preliminary and likely to rise as enforcement continues.
