Ganna Breaks Grand Tour TT Speed Record as Vingegaard Cuts Giro Lead to 27 Seconds

The record pace reshaped the overall race by leaving Jonas Vingegaard 27 seconds from the pink jersey.

Overview

  • Filippo Ganna won Tuesday's 42 km time trial from Viareggio to Massa in 45:53 at about 54.9 km/h, the fastest Grand Tour time trial longer than 40 km.
  • Ineos took a 1–2 on the stage with Thymen Arensman second, and Remi Cavagna finished third for Groupama-FDJ.
  • Jonas Vingegaard finished roughly three minutes behind Ganna yet cut 1:57 from leader Afonso Eulálio, who kept the maglia rosa, the pink jersey worn by the overall leader.
  • The Dane also gained on key rivals, taking 31 seconds from Hindley and 1:22 from Felix Gall to tighten the fight for the top places.
  • A flat, near-straight coastal route with few turns amplified specialists’ power, and the race now heads into rolling and high-mountain days that are likely to decide who wears pink.
