Gangneung Braces for Weekend Rain as Record Drought Strains Water Supply

Officials plan emergency diversions from Doam Dam to supplement a critically depleted reservoir.

Overview

  • The KMA expects 20 to 60 millimeters of rain in Gangneung this weekend, with more than 80 millimeters possible on the northern coast.
  • Rain in Gangwon is forecast to begin Friday night, lasting about nine hours in Gangneung with peak intensity around 10 millimeters per hour.
  • Obong Reservoir stands at about 11.7 percent capacity, the lowest on record for a key drinking-water source.
  • Tap-water access has been cut to preset windows, in some neighborhoods down to just 30 minutes, under a national disaster designation.
  • The Environment Ministry and Gangneung plan test releases from a Doam Dam diversion channel starting Sept. 20 as meteorologists warn one storm may not end the drought.
