Galicia Accelerates Housing Drive: Vigo Greenlights 2,000-Home District as Pontevedra Project Advances

The push fits a statewide plan targeting 10,000 public homes, with land slated for 20,000 protected plus 5,000 free units.

Overview

  • The Xunta gave initial approval to a Project of Autonomous Interest to urbanize 21 hectares in Vigo’s Ofimático area for around 2,000 homes, reserving about €22 million for the works.
  • Officials set a target to begin expropriations in 2027 and to start urbanization in 2028, with the aim of tendering plots that year for subsequent construction.
  • The Vigo plan must complete acoustic studies due to the nearby A-55 and include measures to protect heritage elements while integrating the new district into the urban landscape.
  • Designs envisage mostly 4–7 storey buildings, a limited number up to 12 storeys, a youth residence, commercial space, green areas with more than 2,000 new trees, and a mix of protected and free housing.
  • Separately, the Xunta moved to tender the design for roughly 60–63 public homes on Avenida de Uruguay in Pontevedra, sending topographical and parcelation documents for a plot shared with the State that could expand if the central share is ceded.
